Cap,

Something always told me that there was a kind heart behind your rough exterior. I know how you feel. I have pretty much lived as a zookeeper for most of my life (currently a dog and three cats). As a result, I've had to make the type of decision you and the wife made far too often in the past.

With the loss of a loved one there's always that immeidate emptiness, a void that you think will never be completely filled. And when it's age related or long term illness, our image is of the decline and that lingers for some time.

But with the passage of time, you take a more comprehensive view. You think of the crazy things, the laughs, and the love. You begin to appreciate that you had all those wonderful moments together.

As I think of the passing of those I've loved through the years it's a smile (sometimes a laugh) rather than a tear marking my countenance. And I understand that there really isn't a void. Although they are no longer in my physical presence, they have become a part of me.

Once again, I'm sincerely saddened to hear of your loss.

Regards,

Prof
