Best example of the 1-year free agent thing would be Ivan Rodriguez. Granted, he signed before spring training, but his situation was similar to what those unsigned OOTP free agents go through: Player wants a high salary and long-term contract that no team is willing to give him. So, player ends up taking one year deal in an attempt to get the long term big money deal next year.
