Sounds like you did everything right I am not sure what happened to his player page. But here is a way to recover it even if he is retired. I just stumbled on this a couple of months ago with the HOB.
Get Pierre's Undelete utility from statbased baseball.

Once you have the program you can unretire and undelete everyone who ever played in your league.
Step 1= Make sure you have backed up your league files and that the game is closed
Step 2 - Open the undelete utility and follow instructions to set the proper path to your league file.
Step 3 - Undelete every player in the file and then unretire every player in the file. When done close the utility and reopen the game.
Step 4 = Run the html reports and include player pages. All previously retired players will now show up in the free agent pool as active so player pages will be generated for them all.
Step 5- Reinstall the original league file you backed up and you are done.
The undelete utility worked great until my league was over 9000 players (around my 75th season) I assume it just got to be too much for the program.
