I agree. There have been some truly remarkable fun events to watch. I loved watching the Aussie ruin the medal sweep in diving. The Gold Medal Basketball game was one for the ages. Phelps was fun to watch in the pool. Jamaica was fun on the sprints. Gymnastics was a pleasure, even with the whole Chinese gymnast scam (which may never be resolved). Couple that with a great Opening Cermonies, an expected wonderful Closing Ceremonies, some of the most beautiful venues ever (the one skating venue from Lillihammer still takes the cake in my book), and the beautiful surroundings -- China did a great job. Rogge has every right to continue the closing ceremonies tradition. China really did a good job with these games.
NBC also did a great job, with some of the best coverage ever. They had a nice blend of the human interest stories and did not always focus on American athletes or even the best athletes. The longest tape delays were for track & field, with many events shown live or almost live. The online coverage was outstanding, though I did not use it as much as I expected I would (the video is still too small too enjoy for an extended period and hopefully by 2010 and 2012, they will have this on demand via set top box). Apparently these are the most watched games ever on television and NBC has clearly won in the ratings. Apparently NBC makes pretty good money off the games, but they earned their keep with these games.
I'm already looking forward to Vancouver in 2010 and London in 2012. Hoping Chicago gets 2016. These Olympics affirmed my desire to visit China and only kept the dream alive of attending the games someday (my dad went in 1960 and I have always wanted to go myself).
