Tycobbian Union - East Division
'Cats Claim 5th Straight, Edge Ninjas in Opener
In the opener of a twinbill at Pioneer Park in Hartsdale, the Hellcats edged first place Ginza 7-6 for their fifth triumph in a row. First baseman Walt Long (.247) cracked a three-run homer in the sixth to put them ahead 6-3 and shortstop Terry Bellino (.311) grounded out in the seventh and plated the eventual winning run. Ginza's rally fell short with two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth. The win went to reliever Jackie Bond (4-2 4.50) and the save to Tal Vaitkus (2-0 1.74), but neither were very effective. Bond gave up two runs in two innings and Vaitkus permitted a run in two innings of work. The loser was Kojiro Matsumoto (12-4 2.88), who failed in his try for his 13th victory. Matsumoto was blistered for seven runs in seven innings. Both clubs notched 10 hits apiece with right fielder Mel Poe (.264) going 3-4 for Hartsdale. Shortstop Shinjiro Aoki (.286) went 2-5 for the Ninjas and third baseman Kaz Ojima (.313) was 2-4. It was Ginza fourth consecutive defeat. They have yet to beat the Hellcats in this series.
Ninjas Nakayama Nabs Nightcap, Snaps Streak
The first place Ginza Ninjas nabbed the nightcap 3-1 as Kazuhiro Nakayama put a stop to Hartsdale's five-game win skein and also snapped their own four-game slide. Nakayama (6-9 2.72) stopped the Hellcats on five hits, gave up no earned run, fanned five and issued three walks in a standout performance. He and Danny Griffin sparred on even terms for five innings before the Ninjas jumped in front 2-1 on a triple by third baseman Kaz Ojima (.317) and an RBI groundout by right fielder Charlie Campbell (.289). A double by left fielder Ronnie Graf (.266) made it 3-1 in the ninth. Griffin (6-9 3.56) took the loss, going seven and a third innings, allowing six hits and two runs, only one earned, with five Ks and four bases on balls. The Hellcats won four games in the five-game series.
The two clubs tied the IPA mark for most double plays in a regulation game with 6. Both of them turned three each. Glasco (3) and Volusia (3) set the record on May 31.
Despite the recent slump, Ginza (45-37) is still in the top spot in the Tycobbian Union East standings, while Hartsdale (38-44) is last and 7 games behind them.
CC Salvages Game 1, Holds Off SF 6-4
Cape Coral took a 6-1 lead into the ninth with a very tired Josh Salow on the mound, but the Hurricanes withstood South Fork's last-inning rally to hold them off in the first of two games 6-4. Reliever Hadley Frasch was summoned out of the bullpen by manager Deroche "Lips" Leon with one out and the tying runs on second and third. Frasch struck out the first batter and got his first save when the second batter grounded out. Starter Salow (2-1 3.06) got credit for the victory in a good, but uneven effort. He walked six, fanned seven and yielded three runs and seven hits in eight and a third innings. Vince Bernini (2-3 2.97) recorded the loss, working six innings, allowing four runs and ten hits. The Hurricanes had 17 hits to the Stallions 8, but had trouble getting the runs in. Cape Coral stranded 12 runners, while South Fork left 13 on base. Left fielder Rod Kelly (.313) had two hits and two RBIs, including his 15th home run to spark the 'Canes. First baseman Rodger Wooten (.295) went 3-5 and scored two runs, right fielder Danny Mullins (.317) was 3-5 and a run scored and second baseman Howie Winters (.265) had two hits and drove in two runs. Stallion third baseman Glenn Holliday (.268) had a two-run double to pace them at bat with first baseman Keith Burke (.327) getting 3-4 and scoring once.
Stallions and 'Canes Split, SF Romps in Nightcap
The Stallions roared out of the gate and scored 10 runs in the first three frames and slaughtered Cape Coral 10-4 in the second game of their twinbill. Spearheading the rout were center fielder Ronnie Lee (.316) with 4-for-5, two runs scored and two batted in, first sacker Keith Burke (.340) with 3-for-5, two runs and two RBIs and pitcher Ken Olson (.098) with a two-run single. South Fork chalked up 18 hits to 10 for the Hurricanes. Olson (8-7 2.95) went into the eighth and gave up nine hits and four runs. He needed help from closer Glenn Turnbull (5-3 2.81) for the final four outs. Wally Robinson (10-6 3.28) started for Cape Coral and pitched badly, being raked for eight runs in less than three innings.
The Hurricanes and the Stallions are both tied for the runner-up spot in the division and are a close 3 games behind leading Ginza (45-37).
Z's Top Nats 3-1 in First Game, Pierce Wins It
In game one of a doubleheader, Luxora won its third game in succession over Ozarka 3-1 at De la Vega Stadium. Chris Pierce (8-6 3.08), a 23-year-old righthander, outpitched Luther Hatch, holding the Nats to just one run and six hits with seven strikeouts and only one walk. Hatch (8-10 3.81) labored with six walks and nine hits, but held the Zorros to three runs, leaving 11 on base. Center fielder Tom Fortunato (.271), second baseman Paco Benitez (.251) and Pierce (.140) drove in the runs for Luxora and third baseman Doug Cunningham (.253) plated the Naturals only run. The Zorros took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, Ozarka tied it in the top of the sixth, the Z's went up to stay 2-1 in the last of the sixth and added on the final run in the seventh.
Nats and Z's Divide Doubleheader
Pitcher Yasuyuki Nakagawa got Ozarka a split of the doubleheader with a 5-3 triumph over Luxora in game two. Nakagawa (9-8 3.13) survived a three-run seventh to notch his 9th victory of the season. He went the distance, allowed three runs and ten hits, while fanning seven and walking two. The Naturals pounced on Keith Callahan (6-8 3.27) for six runs in eight innings and dealt him the loss. Second baseman Duane Starr (.291), center fielder Teddy Braun (.291) and shortstop Gil Lantz (.242) all homered to pace Ozarka. Luxora third baseman Rico Vina (.295) slapped one out of the park, his 12th of the year. Each team had 10 hits.
Luxora (39-41) remains in the fourth spot in the TU East race, 5 games off the pace. Ozarka (39-43) is fifth and trails by 6 games.
