There is a danger when we try to generalize from our personal and anecdotal experiences to the game as a whole. The reason why RonCo's criticism of the player development model has to be taken more seriously is that it is based on a far broader sample of players.

EDIT: I do agree that it would be better for the drop to happen not as suddenly as it sometimes does! But I have only rarely seen it happen in the way you describe.
Yes, it really is broken, and RonCo has pretty much proven it.
