That's a good question. I'll give Markus credit for being conscientious in that he will churn out patches right after the release of a new version if he perceives major to moderately significant problems from the feedback in these forums. With all due respect to the beta testers, the best testers are the general public and he listens carefully to us during that time.
So, I would normally wait for the first or second patch because chances are there is a problem that will affect your play that needs fixing. There comes a time, however, when the fixes become pretty obscure. Based on the hindsight of looking at the 9.1.6 fix list, I would say 9.12 was the time to jump in (although I converted earlier because of the darned 2007/8 lefty-righty split ratings merge problem that apparently has affected me psychologically to the point where I cannot shut up about it already
