He should be in as an active since you got this roster at the start of the season and it did cost Pirates some bucks to drop him.
Leave him in, he like Barry Bonds are one of those that could and should be in.
As this note shows he was not officially out until end of April. Whatever has happend after season started will be left to the AI and the gamer since itīs a simulation from that time on.
I even like the idea to have even some more guys unretired, since they might be having one last season, but thatīs another matter
