Since you did not import the complete history the game is using the Braves franchise ID which is ATL rather than the Team/Year ID which is ML1 for the players years previous to your inaugural year. The dash year in Mathews record is because that year he played for the Boston Braves.

If you import complete history this will not happen but that can take hours during game setup so you might just want to live with it. Your choice.
