I've also gotten around the draft market size problem by just tinkering with things a bit to make sure there's nothing hugely crazy and imposing a reasonable salary cap. However, I think things could be done a bit better.
For example...
a) Allow users to set market sizes, or randomly assign market sizes BEFORE the inaugural draft. This would allow you to choose which teams have what market sizes or edit them.
b) Make contract information available before/during the inaugural draft. These could still be randomly assigned based on age/talent as they are now.
c) Make sure the AI teams draft accordingly based on their market sizes. This is the thing that could take some work for Markus.
