Do not allow trading of draft picks or better yet have players assigned to their original teams.
Set trading frequency to low or very low.
By doing these the foreknowledge becomes very frustrating because you know who the good/great players are but you just can't get them.
Also, if you use a shorter period for free agency, even if you do get the great players you probably won't be able to keep them (or very many) with the salary restraints. Also be sure the owner is setting the budget.
