Personally, I couldn't see wanting to use an NBA or NHL playoff system for baseball. While I'm not so big on only seeing division winners make the playoffs like hardcore traditionalists, I can definitely see where they are coming from and would want to give the first place team the reward they deserve with a bye through the first round. Otherwise you're devaluing the regular season just too much.
Markus, if an easy way to implement byes comes to mind, please do add them.

Byes in baseball are horrible ideas because they would hurt both the hitting (loss of timing) and pitching (losing conditioning). In OOTP? Why not? IRL? Never.
