[Joy in Mudville]

Boston's Tony Conigliaro became the first player to bat as a designated hitter in Joy in Mudville history in Friday's season opener at Fenway Park.

After the visiting New York Yankees went down in order in the top of the first inning, Conigliaro stepped into the box as Boston's No. 2 hitter. Interestingly, the Revere, Massachusetts native followed his brother Billy who was the Red Sox leadoff man.

Conigliaro grounded weakly back to Yankee starter Mel Stottlemyre in his first at-bat. He finished the game 1-for-7 with a run scored in Boston's 3-2 win in 14 innings.

Yankee DH Pete Ward went 1-for-5 in his debut.
