Rangers Reacquire Howard from Reds
The Texas Rangers reacquired veteran slugger Frank Howard from the Cincinnati Reds late Thursday evening.
Howard, 36, originally belonged to the Texas franchise which at that time played its games as the Washington Senators. Howard will likely fill the Rangers' need for a designated hitter.
Howard is a career .247 hitter with 62 home runs and 193 RBIs. However, he is coming off a miserable season with the Reds in which he batted just .210 with six homers and 36 RBIs.
Howard came to Cincinnati in an April 1971 trade that also sent pitcher Joe Coleman to the Reds. Both players helped Cincinnati win the 1971 Joy in Mudville World Series.
Meanwhile, outfielder Roger Freed goes to the Reds in this year's deal. Freed, 26, is a two-time All-Star at the minor league level. Originally a member of the Baltimore organization, Freed has never had more than 18 at-bats in one big league season. He will likely compete for a reserve outfield role with the Reds.
