Matlack Shuts Out Rangers; Orioles Grab 2-0 Playoff Lead
Baltimore--Jon Matlack locked up the Texas Rangers Saturday afternoon in game two of the American League Championship Series.
Matlack scattered nine hits and issued just one walk en route to a 6-0 shutout as the Baltimore Orioles grabbed a two games-to-none lead in the playoffs.
Despite getting outhit 9-6, the Orioles made the most of their opportunities. Baltimore scored two runs in the second inning and three more in the third.
Texas starter Bill Gogolewski helped the Oriole cause by giving up four hits and five walks in four innings. In addition, the Ranger right-hander committed a costly error.
Davey Johnson and Bob Boone each drove home two runs for Baltimore. Ranger leadoff man Dave Nelson collected three hits in the game.
Following a day off for travel, the playoffs will resume at Arlington Stadium. Texas will start right-hander Doyle Alexander. Baltimore will counter with lefty Ken Holtzman.
