Padres Land Leadoff Man

The San Diego Padres have landed the leadoff man they were seeking.

San Diego acquired outfielder Paul Blair from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for pitcher Marty Pattin and a second-round draft pick.

Blair, 28, has bounced back and forth between Triple-A Odell and the Orioles for the past two seasons. Noted for his solid defense in center field, Blair is batting .538 this year (7-for-13). Back in 1970 he became the first player in Joy in Mudville League history to hit for the cycle. Blair is a lifetime .277 hitter.

Pattin, meanwhile, has been well traveled. Originally a member of the Milwaukee Brewers, the right hander has now been dealt three times. Pattin has appeared in only three games this season with San Diego. He was winless in three decisions with the Padres. The 29-year-old has a dismal 16-41 career record.

In related news, San Diego has called up minor league prospects Dwight Evans, George Hendricks, Ken Reitz, Doc Medich and Norm Angelini.

The Padres have optioned big leaguers Mike Corkins, Tony Cloninger, Al Ferrara, Chris Cannizaro and Larry Stahl to the minors.
