INJURY WOES CONTINUE
FOR BRAVES PITCHING STAFF

Last Monday it was confirmed that Braves starter Bob Rush would be out of action for a month after suffering a bicep muscle injury. It was a setback that the ballclub didn't need at this early stage of the campaign but yesterday the situation only worsened as, in the space of two innings Milwaukee lost not only World Series hero Carl Willey but also reliever Warren Spahn. Pitching in the 7th at Ebbets Willey complained of tightness in his shoulder and was replaced by Spahn. Having faced just three batters Spahn walked off the mound with what has been diagnosed as a strained elbow ligament. When it was all said and done the Braves escaped Brooklyn with a 3-1 win and a four-game series split but that was the furtherest thing from manager Fred Haney's mind.

"We'll have to ride it out," said Haney. "Just like we've done before. I'll admit it's gonna be difficult without two guys like Bob and Carl in the rotation but they should be back and ready to go again in a couple of weeks. If anything good can come out of it, it's that some of our younger guys will get a chance to show what they've got."

Rush was placed on the 15-day disabled list back on the 19th, both Willey and Spahn joining him there after yesterday's game. The Braves traded 1st baseman Frank Torre to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday for 21 year-old Cuban starter Mike Cuellar, who was assigned to the minors. Rush was replaced in the rotation by the 20 year-old Jack Fisher while veteran righthander Ned Garver is likely to take Willey's spot. Garver is the odd-man out in a quartet that includes three who are no older than 23, with World Series starter Joey Jay and the promising Puerto Rican Juan Pizarro completing the rotation.

The Braves will be at County Stadium against the Phillies today for the first of nine consecutive home games, Pittsburgh and St. Louis also set to pay a visit during the stand...
