Meet the Mets: Series MVP Cuellar Dealt to New York
What have you done for me lately?
That's the question the Baltimore Orioles must have asked Mike Cuellar early Wednesday morning. Cuellar, the Most Valuable Player in the 1970 Joy in Mudville World Series, was traded by Baltimore to the New York Mets.
Cuellar, 33, won 22 games last season for the Orioles. The left-hander posted a 3.34 ERA. Cuellar, also the American League Championship Series MVP, was 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA during the World Series.
Baltimore acquired starting pitcher Tom Seaver in the deal with New York. The 25-year-old right-hander was just 10-12 with a 3.40 ERA for the Mets. Seaver struck out 176 batters in 254 innings.
"On the surface this looks like a one-sided trade," said Baltimore GM Dan V. "But, we like what we see in Seaver, and he's eight years younger."
Cuellar is the second pitcher that the Orioles have traded since the World Series. Jim Palmer was dealt to Atlanta right after the Fall Classic.
