Powell Lauded as American League MVP
First baseman John "Boog" Powell pocketed the Joy in Mudville American League Most Valuable Player Award.
Powell finished four voting points ahead of Oakland right fielder Reggie Jackson in the balloting.
Powell, the 26-year-old Baltimore Oriole, led the American League in home runs (42), slugging (.575) and OPS (.984). He batted .325 with 113 RBIs.
Both Jackson and third-place finisher Tony Oliva of Minnesota received a first-place vote.
New York Yankees Bobby Murcer and Roy White placed fourth and fifth respectively.
Others receiving votes were Sal Bando of Oakland, Alex Johnson of Calfornia and Carl Yastrzemski of Boston.
