Baltimore Captures Inaugural Joy in Mudville World Series
Baltimore--Perhaps it was only fitting that a guy named Jim played a key role in deciding the inaugural Joy in Mudville World Series.
Baltimore right-hander Jim Hardin pitched and hit the Orioles to a 10-3 victory Sunday over Pittsburgh at Memorial Stadium. The win gave Baltimore a four games-to-two Series triumph.
Early on, it appeared the Pirates would force a game seven Monday. Pittsburgh took a 2-0 lead with a pair of third-inning runs. Matty Alou first doubled home Manny Sanguillen, and then Roberto Clemente singeld Alou in.
The Orioles finally broke through against Pittsburgh left-hander Luke Walker in the fourth. Walks to Brooks Robinson and rookie Chris Speier sandwiched a single by center fielder Dave May loaded the bases.
That brought Hardin. a .184 hitter with no home runs during the regular season, to the plate. Hardin cracked a 1-0 pitch into the left-field bleachers for a grand slam.
The Orioles never looked back. By the end of the seventh inning, Baltimore had built a 6-2 lead.
If Pittsburgh--the team that rallied from an 0-2 deficit in the National League Championship Series--still held any comeback thoughts, those hopes were dashed in the Orioles' final at-bat of the season. Brooks Robinson smacked a three-run homer off reliever Fred Cambria to put the game away.
Hardin, the game three loser, scattered seven hits and struck out two en route to the victory. Left-hander Pete Richert replaced Hardin and pitched the final two innings. The 30-year-old reliever pitched 8.2 innings of scoreless post-season ball.
Walker, the game three winner in a masterful performance, struggled mightily. The Pirate lefty surrendered five runs on six hits and six walks in just five innings.
