A's Metcalf Blanks Redhawks on 5 Hits
The Athletics have taken over first place in the RBU North. Glasco's Kenny Metcalf (2-1) spun a nice 4-0 shutout over Far Mountain, allowing on 5 hits with 6 strikeouts and just one walk. The Athletics hammered 3 out of the park with RF Jose Valenzuela, 1B Francisco Robles and SS Zach Byorvik all providing the longball. Pat Brown (0-3) lost his third game of the year, being peppered for all three homers and all the runs. He was relieved in the sixth.
The victory gave Glasco (9-3) a one-game lead over Valmara (8-4). It was the A's third win in a row. Far Mountain (5-7) is now tied for fourth place with Elnora (5-7).
All-Stars Knock Vipers Out of First
The Elnora All-Stars whipped Valmara 6-2 behind lefthander John Tinker (1-1). The loss dropped the Vipers into second place in the RBU North Division, one game behind Glasco. Tinker was tagged for 9 hits, walked 3 and fanned 5, but rose to the occasion, when Valmara got into scoring position. 2B Gil Foster provided 3 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBIs for the winners, including his 4th homer of the season. RF Art Atkins also chipped in with 3 hits and scored 3 times.
Valmara starter Paul Schoenfeld (0-1) never got in the groove - in 6 innings he was tagged for 6 hits and 5 runs. Schoenfeld absorbed the loss.
The Vipers dropped the last two contests to Elnora.
Colfax Sneaks by Volusia 6-5
The Blasters won a close 6-5 decision from Volusia at Mountain View Stadium in Colfax today. Walt Sellers stopped a budding Vigilante rally in the ninth after he allowed them to cut the lead to just one run. After he surrendered a two-run homer to Jojo Nunez, Sellers settled down and retired the next three batters to get the save. SS Warren O'Reilly got the big blow of the ballgame, when he crashed a three-run blast in the 4-run fifth. The winning pitcher was Greg Forest (1-1), who almost went the route, but stumbled in the ninth and needed help. He tossed 8 innings, gave up 9 hits and 4 runs with 4 Ks and 1 BB. Leo Flores got the loss for Volusia as he yielded 5 runs and 7 hits in 6 innings.
The Blasters (6-6) have won two straight from Volusia (3-9) and pushed the Vigilantes deeper in the RBU North cellar. Colfax is now in third place and trail the division leader Glasco by three games.
