Raines doesn't have the 1986 Mets or a 1987 MVP award to polish his image.
I wonder if Carter, who was probably a HOFer anyway, didn't have his productive few years in the New York limelight (including a legendary championship season) if he'd have gotten as much support.
Same goes for Dawson. I don't think people really "woke up" to Dawson until he got out of Montreal and became a Cubs 'superstar.'
Raines was merely solid in his post-Montreal career. If he'd posted one of his vintage Montreal-era seasons in a hotter market, I bet you'd see a bigger percentage of voters behind him.
Anyway, I don't think Montreal is the sole reason Raines is jilted. I think it is part of it, but mostly I just don't think people understand or appreciate his particular brand of excellence.
