no, you are not converting him. Simply switch his primary position to SP and plug him in your rotation and at short so he plays the field when he is not pitching (in the minors). If you leave his primary position as pitcher, he will pitch normally and play the field when he is not the starting pitcher. The only downside is that as long as his primary position is pitcher, his batting ratings will not develop. Conversely, if you leave his position as SS, his pitching ratings will not develop.
I would draft him and assign his positon to be starting pitcher assuming his endurance rating is high enough.
