If I had a player that was injured for a month or even two months, I would be tempted to just put him on the 15-day DL and let him sit there until healed. Otherwise, on the 60-day DL he might heal earlier than his DL time was up.

A player on the 60-day DL does not use a 40-man roster spot; a player on the 15-day DL does. If your 40-man is maxed out, and you have an injury, you might need to free up a 40-man spot in order to call up a suitable replacement.
