Toronto Blue Jays Roster
Part 3: Position Players
C Tom Johnson
Age: 28 Height: 6'4" Weight: 208 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 8/9/6/9/8 Rating @ C: 7 Arm: 6
Drafted: 5th round 150th Overall by Los Angeles Angels in 2001. Signed as a free agent by Toronto in 2006.
2006 Stats: .238 3 HR 19 RBIs
Contract: $350,000 Auto Renew
GM Comment: Not a bad offensive catcher. he isn't going to win any MVP Awards but he looks like he could put up solid numbers. He is only average defensively and doesn't have a great arm.
C Robert Francis
Age: 25 Height: 6'3" Weight: 200 lbs
Bats: L Throws: R
Ratings: 8/8/7/7/9 Rating @ C: 10 Arm: 9
Drafted: 10th Round 278th Overall in 2001 by San Diego. Traded to Toronto in 2004 by the Padres.
2006 Stats: .234 17 HR 61 RBIs
Contract: $3,161,600/1 year
GM Comment: Basically the left handed version of Tom Johnson except he is a far better defensive catcher. He hits for a little bit more power than his right handed counterpart and I believe he has the potential to be the starting C in Toronto next year.
1B Willis Hicks
Age: 25 Height: 6'0" Weight: 158 lbs
Bats: L Throws: L
Ratings: 9/3/8/5/4 Rating @ 1B: 5 Arm: 4
Drafted: 2nd Round 33rd overall by Oakland in 2000. Traded to Toronto in 2005 by The Chicago Cubs.
2006 Stats: .299 14 HR 45 RBI
Contract: $455,000 /1 year
GM Comment: An average first baseman. I wouldn't expect great things out of him. He makes a good solid backup but only plays an average defensive 1B and doesn't play any other positions.
1B Mauro Lopez
Age: 29 Height: 6'0" Weight: 217 lbs
Bats: L Throws: L
Ratings: 6/6/10/8/3 Rating @ 1B: 6 Arm: 2
Drafted: 3rd Round 69th Overall in 2000 Inagural Draft by Toronto.
2006 Stats: .246 36 HR 93 RBI
Contract: $17,800,000 /3 years
GM Comment: A big swinging power hitter. He won't walk much and strikesout a ton, but he puts up good offensive numbers. He makes a lot of money and could be potential trade bait this offseason.
2B Ryan Turvill
Age: 25 Height: 5'9" Weight: 200 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 10/10/4/10/10 Rating @ 2B: 8 Arm: 5
Drafted: 2nd Round 51st Overall in 2000 by Baltimore. Traded to Toronto by Baltimore in 2006.
2006 Stats: .254 8 HR 28 RBI
Contract: $6,469,200*Arbitration Eligible
GM Comment: Possible my best hitter for average. He has the potential to hit .320 and with his speed steal 40-50 bases. He will likely be my leadoff man next season.
2B Sancho Perez
Age: 36 Height: 6'2" Weight: 215 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 6/8/1/10/8 Rating @ 2B: 9 Arm: 4
Drafted: 20th round 574th Overall in 2000 Inagural Draft by Seattle. Signed as a free agent by toronto in 2005.
2006 Stats: .200 0 HR 4 RBI
Contract: $440,000 /1 year
GM Comment: He really doesn't have much upside. He doesn't hit for much of an average and has absolutely no power. His only strength is that he can play all 4 infield positions very well and can run fairly well. He is 36 and not likely to be with the team much longer.
SS Santiago Mendez
Age: 37 Height: 5'10" Weight: 209 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 7/9/6/9/5 Rating @ SS: 5 Arm: 8
Drafted: 22nd Round 645th Overall by Cleveland in the 2000 inagural Draft. Traded from the Indians to the Jays in 2000.
2006 Stats: .195 3 HR 15 RBI
Contract: $410,000 /1 year
GM Comment: He is useless. In his 6 years with the Jays he has never hit higher than .213. He will likely be released or assigned to AAA Syracuse
SS Roberto Diaz
Age: 28 Height: 6'0" Weight: 210 lbs
Bats: L Throws: R
Ratings: 7/10/3/7/10 Rating @ SS: 9 Arm: 7
Drafted: 5th Round Pick 143rd Overall in the 2000 First year player draft by Seattle. Traded to Toronto by Detroit in 2005.
2006 Stats: .232 6 HR 36 RBI
Contract: $350,000 Auto Renew
GM Comment: He is an average at shot at best, but with my lack of depth he will most likely be the starting SS next season.
LF Xavier 'Gabby' Contes
Age: 24 Height: 6'1" Weight: 160 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 10/8/9/8/10 Rating @ LF: 8 Arm: 7
Drafted: 1st Round 2nd Overall in 2001 by Oakland. Traded to Toronto by Oaklad in 2003.
2006 Stats: .297 31 HR 98 RBI
Contract: $10,460,000 /2 years
GM Comment: Along with 1B Mauro Lopez they provide the bulk of the power for the Jays lineup. He does it all hits for average and power and can steal a few bases here and there. He has already drawn some trade interest but I am not sure if I want to move him.
CF Sung-ho Ch'oe
Age: 25 Height: 6'1" Weight: 200 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 8/7/2/6/10 Rating @ CF: 10 Arm: 8
Drafted: 5th Round 131st Overall in 2000 1st year player draft by Atlanta. Signed by Toronto as a Free Agent in 2006.
2006 Stats: .266 3 HR 14 RBI
Contract: $455,000 /1 year
GM Comment: An excellent defensive outfielder with a great arm. He can play all 3 outfield spots very well and has a cannon for an arm. He won't hit much but makes a servicable 4th outfielder and defensive replacement.
CF Matt Harrell
Age: 28 Height: 6'0" Weight: 181 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 9/9/9/6/5 Rating @ CF: 10 Arm: 10
Drafted: 1st Round 3rd Overall in 2000 First Year Player Draft by Oakland. Traded to Toronto by Detroit in 2005.
2006 Stats: .293 4 HR 34 RBI
Contract: $468,000 /1 year
GM Comment: He has the potential to be a superstar hitting for a good average and power bur just can't seem to put it all together. At 28 years old he may be done developing but he is a good backup/defensive replacement and is very cheap.
CF Aquilino Diaz
Age: 29 Height: 6'0" Weight: 168 lbs
Bats: R Throws: L
Ratings: 9/7/5/10/10 Rating @ CF: 8 Arm: 7
Drafted: 2nd Round 54th Overall in 200 Inagural Draft by Boston. Signed as a Free Agent with Toronto in 2005.
2006 Stats: .257 10 HR 54 RBI
Contract: $16,070,000 /3 years
GM Comment: I don't know what the previous GM was thinking with this contract. He has been nothing more than average his entire career. My plan is to trade him for anything I can get. I can think of 100 ways I would rather spend $16 million over the next 3 years.
RF Reynaldo Vasquez
Age: 35 Height: 6'0" Weight: 207 lbs
Bats: L Throws: L
Ratings: 5/7/10/9/3 Rating @ LF: 10 Arm: 9
Drafted: 7th Round 189th Overall in 2000 Inagural Draft by Toronto.
2006 Stats: .224 13 HR 35 RBI
Contract: $11,300,000 /3 year
GM Comment: He was a good player but his contact skills have dropped dramatically. He just can't catchup with the fastball anymore and it is starting to show in his stats. He is also making $11 million and is signed for 3 more years. He will be the 1st player on the trading block
GM Comments:
Well the lineup is not that great. There is a lot of money tied up in a few players with potentials that are declining very fast. I think I am going to be pretty much blowing this thing up and building the team the way that I want.
