2011 First Year Player Draft - Jays Pick 30th...Again

June 1st, 2011.

The Toronto Blue Jays will select 30th in this years First Year Player Draft for the second year in a row. GM Ryan Stewart was asked about his teams draft position "Well I am kind of suprised that we only have 1 pick in the 1st round I thought that MR Millard Carter would be signed by someone and we would get a pick as compensation. He is a really good pitcher I am suprised he is still out there. In terms of picking 30th it is good because it means that you had the best record in baseball and won the Worl Series but it is bad in the sense that most of the top rated prospects are long gone byt this point. You really have to rely on good scouting and try to get maximum value for your picks. I think our scouting staff is one of the best in the league and our recent draft history will back me up on that"

Toronto Blue Jays 1st-3rd Round Picks

SP Alexis Stewart (1st Round)
19 Years Old, 6'1", 210 lbs Bats: L Throws: L
St. Paul Highschool, Arlington Texas - Highschool (USHS)
Potential Ratings:10/10/8 Fastball: 96-98 MPH
Comment: A good looking young left hander with a plus fastball and good secondary stuff. He projects as a No 3-4 Starter in the Big leagues an was an Allstar 3 times for his Highschool team. In 2011 he was 6-3 with a 2.49 ERA with 7 BB And 102 K in 11 Starts
Estimated Arrival in the Majors: I like to be very cautious with young arms and I usually don't draft a highschool pitcher with my first round picks but my scouts were so high on him I couldn't pass him up. I would say he will be in the system for at least 4-5 years before he gets his shot at the big club. He really needs to work on his control as it is rated 1 right now. I am looking forward to watching him develop.

C Chris Davidson (2nd Round)
19 Years Old, 6'1", 205 lbs Bats: R Throws: R
Hickory Hills Highschool, Illinois - Highschool (USHS)Potential Ratings:8/7/10/7/5 Rating @ C: 5 Outfield Arm: 6
Comment: A powerhitting Cwho hit .333 with 11 HR 40 RBI in 2011. He projects as a cleanup hitter in big leagues if he can continue to hit with power. He needs to work on his contact and plate dicipline or he may struggle against tougher pitching in the Professional ranks. He is not a great defensive C and I may try him at 1B to see how he works out there.
Estimated Arrival in the Majors: With his current ratings I think he may struggle the first few years adjusting to Professional Baseball and because he is only 19 he won't be rushed. I think an estimated date for him to reach the Majors is between 2015-2016 if he can develop to his full potential.

SP Michael Montgomery (3rd Round)
22 Years Old, 6'5", 210 lbs Bats: L Throws: L
Columbia University - College (NCAA)
Potential Ratings: 7/9/8 Fastball: 91-93 MPH
Comment: A bit of a project player he pitched well for the Lions in 2011 going 7-3 with a 3.13 ERA but he walked 25 and struckout only 15. He doesn't throw as hard as my 1st round pick and I don't think his potential is as high but I believe he could be a servicable 5th/spot starter in the Majors. He really needs to work on his control and will likely start out in Rooki Ball with Pulaski to gain some confidance.
Estimated Arrival in the Majors: 2014-2015. Depending on how he progresses maybe earlier. He is a little more mature than my 1st round pick and has pitched at the college level so he has experience against better hitters. A lot will depend on wether or not he can cut down his walks allowed.

Toronto Draft Summary:
