Blue Jays Get Win on Opening Day

The Toronto Blue Jays played host to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at the Rogers Center today to kick off the 2011 season. Starting for the Jays was SP Christian Jacobs who was 19-7 with a 1.89 ERA last year. On the hill for the Devil Rays is their top pitching prospect SP Jeff 'Scrappy' Hurley who was 5-4 with a 2.32 ERA for AA Montgomery last season. Hurley was the Rays 1st round pick 17th overall in 2007.

RF Alonso Martinez lead off the bottom of the first inning with a homerun to deep right field and C Hugh Edwards hit solo homeruns in the 4th and 8th as the Jays pounded the Tampa Bay rookie for 7 runs on 9 hits, He lasted 7.1 innings and walked 2 and struckout 4. For the Jays SP Christian Jacobs was spectacular going all 9 innings giving up 1 run on 8 hits and strikingout 9.
