Roster's Expand: Jays Call Up Pair

September 1st, 2010.

The rosters across Major League Baseball expanded today and the Toronto Blue Jays called up a pair of players to help out during the month of September. The Jays added CL Sergio Vargas a 22 year old left handed flame thrower and C Lloyd Mathews. The one player who was likely to get a callup 3B Dave Chambers, Toronto's top hitting prospect is out for 8 months with a toen back muscle and won't be back until well into next season.

CL Sergio Vargas - 6-1 39 SV 0.92 ERA (AAA Syracuse)
C Lloyd Matthews - .269 4 HR 19 RBI (AAA Syracuse)

GM Ryan Stewart on the callups "We have a lot of young players int he system who are only 19-21 years old and I don't want to rush them by bringing them up to the majors too soon. Vargas and Matthews are older (Matthews is 25) and we think a little more developed than some of our other prospects in AAA. We would have gotten a good look at 3B Dave Chambers but he went down with the injury. If all goes well and we makes it back to where he is now you may see him in 2011 around this time"
