Blue Jays Open Up Spring Training

March 3rd, 2010.

The Toronto Blue Jayspitchers and catchers began arriving in Dunedin Florida at the Jays Spring Training Facility today as they begin the push to the start of the regular season. The position players do not have to report until next week but many of them are already here with one thing on their mind...avenging their 3rd consecutive early exit from the playoffs last season.

There are a number of young jays players who receivd an invitation to spring traning this season and have legitimate shots at making the big club this year. They include:

3B Dave Chambers (Toronto's 1st round pick in 2007)
1B Bill Darby (Signed as a Non-drafted FA from Canada in 2008)
C Lloyd Matthews (Toronto's 2nd Round Pick in 2007)
C Nick Cooper (Claimed off Waivers from Florida in 2007)
RF Alonso Martinez (Signed as a Non-drafted FA From the Dominincan Republic in 2008)
SP Anthony Simmons (Aquired from Chicago (A) in 2009)
SP Antonio Perez (Toronto's 3rd Round Pick in 2007)
MR Julius Perez (Aquired from Boston in an Offseason Trade)
CL Carlos Yhuit (Toronto's 11th Round Pick in 2008)
CL Vincent Evans (Aquired from Boston in an Offseason Trade)

The biggest competition will be for the back up catcher position as well as for the last 3 spots in the bullpenn. One of those bullpen spots is most likely allready spoken for as rookie CL Steve Perkins will be the teams closer with the trade of CL Lorenzo Silva to Boston. GM Ryan Stewart Commented on his young players in camp "We really have to hand it too our scouting staff as our top 3 picks in the 2007 draft have a shot at making the big league club as well we have some late round picks (like C.Yhuit from the 11th round) who could make the team. The future looks promising and if we can keep on developing our own talent in house this organization could be very successful in the long run"
