MLB Rosters Expand: Jays to get a Look at 4 Prospects

September 1st, 2009.

The Major League Rosters expanded today allowing teams to bring up some help for the last month of the season. It is a perfect time of the year for teams to get a look at top prospects who may be auditioning for spots with the big club next season. The Blue Jays have announced that they have called up 4 players form AAA Syracuse to give some regulars a much needed day off.

CL Steve 'Cookie Monster' Perkins (21 years old RHP)
5-3 39 SV 1.89 ERA (AAA Syracuse)
-Drafted in the 4th round 104th overall in 2007 he has electric stuff and can touch 100 MPH on the radar gun. he looks like the Closer of the future for the Jays.

SP Antonio Perez (21 year old LHP)
15-4 2.51 ERA in 25 Starts (AAA Syracuse)
-Drafted in 3rd Round 74th overall in 2007. He looks to have average stuff and could be a #5/spot starter in the Majors.

RF Alonso Martinez (22 years old Bats: R Throws: R)
.308 11HR 45 RBI (AAA Syracuse)
-Signed as a non-drafted free agent from the Dominican Republic in 2008. He moved up through the system fast and looks like he could be a starting RF in the future. He does strikeout a lot and is not the best defensively.

C Nick Cooper (23 years old Bats: R Throws: R)
.284 36 HR 103 RBI (AAA Syracuse)
-A waiver claim in 2007 from the Florida Marlins he is the jays back up catcher of the future. He is not as good defensively as current Jays backup Rufiano Troni but has more offensive upside.

GM Ryan Stewart commented on the callups "It is a good time ofr us to get a look at some of our kids. We have a pretty large lead in the AL East and can afford to give some of these players a good long look for roster spots next season"
