Blue Jays Claim Arm From Pittsburgh

The Toronto Blue Jays announced today that they have successfully claimed SP Manny Armando from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Armando is a 24 year old right hander with a 90-92 MPH fastball. He also throws a curveball and changeup. He spent the entire 2007 season so far with Pittsburgh's AAA team in Richmond where he put up a 6-4 record with a 4.18 ERA in 17 games. He has walked 41 and struck out 82 with a 1.25 WHIP. GM Ryan Stewart said that Toronto claimed him simply for depth at the AAA level. He porvides Toronto with a little bit of insurance should one of the starters go down with an injury. He was added to Toronto's 40 man roster and immediately optioned to AAA Syracuse.
