A surprise at the top as the Yankees selected LF Luis Gonzalez with the first-overall pick, taking the 4-star Gonzo instead of such 5-star prospects as Edgar Martinez, Darryl Strawberry or Denny Lyons. The latter trio were the next three to go, with Lyons to the Phils at #2, Edgar to the Giants (he's going to love hitting in the Polo Grounds!) at #3 and Darryl to the Tribe at #4. The first pitcher taken was Jose Rijo to the Dodgers at #5.
The last "80" on the scouting scale to be chosen was Nomar Garciaparra who dropped all the way to #8 for the Cubs, a steal for them at that slot, although it's tough to argue with the selection of Bruce Sutter just ahead of him at #7 by the Tigers.
The Yankees may have gotten the steal of the draft by getting Pepper Martin with their 2nd round pick. Pepper can play 3B or OF and should fit in nicely in the high-octane New York offense. They still need pitching though
Darrell Porter, the best catcher in the crop slipped to #15, going to the Braves. 4.5 star catchers don't grow on trees, and Porter could be a huge pickup for Boston as they try to chase down their cpu-brethren, the 1931 NL Champion Pirates in 1932.
