It was a bang-bang play. Can't blame the ump. Any time a play is that close, the game can be in the hands of the ump--but who put it there? Good Rockies hitting, bad Percival pitching and a rainbow of a short throw by Giles. A better throw by Giles (or Percival doing his job) keeps the Padres from having to put the game in the hands of an ump on a split-second call. You have to look at that close of an ump call as a probability that is part of the game, as you know the call isn't going to be right 100% of the time.

Also, the catcher was blocking the plate without the ball, as he very clearly never possessed the ball at any point during the play. And blocking the plate without the ball is against the rules, no?

Anyway, there were no outs in the inning. The Padres blew it, period. It's going to be very annoying if the media and Pads fans don't recognize that, and if they cry all week long about this call.

What the hell did Percival do wrong ?
