AI Issues: Signing/Releasing

One thing that computer managers continually do is sign players to multi-year deals, then release them after a few months, many times when the player is performing well for his club. This happens countless times in my fictional league. Here's the latest example:

2/20/2008: Charlotte signs 34 year old Gabe Santiago to a 5 year deal at $1.1 M per year.

6/9/2008: Charlotte signs 32 year old free agent Brad Hawkins to a 1 year $456,000 deal.

6/9/2008: Santiago is released (4 months into his 60 month contract), even though he has posted a 2.92 ERA this year and got a save yesterday. Santiago refused his assignment to the minors. I would too if I was 34 and pitching as well as him!

Santiago's ratings (stuff/movement/control/velocity): 6/6/7/5
Hawkins' ratings: 5/6/7/5

Don't get me wrong: Hawkins is a good reliever. I was considering signing him too. But I don't think it is very realistic for a team to release a player who is having a great season, just because there's another player out there who *might* do as well.

This wasn't even the best example. I've seen worse cases.

My fear (and I've stated this before): I'm afraid that AI diecsions are being based solely on player ratings and not on the stats that the players are generating, which would be unrealistic.

BTW: Charlotte has extra cash laying around, and is expected to have a $5M profit this year, roughly.
