If the Red Sox and Yankees finished tied, the first thing that becomes relevant is the Wild Card. If one team is going to be the division winner and the other is the wild card, than they use the series of tie breaks to crown the division winner. Head-to-head, in division, etc. They would not play a one game playoff in this scenario.
If the Red Sox and Yankees finished tied and another team is the Wild Card than they play a one game playoff no matter what.

As for Joba, he either has an impressive skill to miss his location in the exact same place two times in a row or the suspension is warranted.
