In baseball, you can't tell a batter to on purposely make an out. Baseball is the most stat-driven sport there is in terms of getting higher-money contracts. And as far as stopping at first base on a sure double, there's something called slugging percentage. It's one of the most important stats looked at after batting average, HR's, and RBI's. So stopping at first base on an easy double would lower that player's SLG percentage.
(Batting average and RBI's by themselves pretty much suck at determining how good a player is, but that's a different thread all together. Stats like OBP, OPS, OPS+, VORP, WARP, and EQA are much better.)
