Here's a typical Myers scenario, based on what I often observed this year: The opposition is mounting a rally, runners on first and second, one out. Myers is called in to do the job that he was being paid for, to get the lefty out who is up next. He fails, and gives up a single or a walk. Torre lifts him and brings in somebody else who either shuts the door or, more commonly, lets one or two of the runners inherited by Myers to score but manages to get the third out before Myers' runner can score. Result: Myers' ERA is unchanged and improves when he pitches well in other, non-pressure situations. He still failed to do his primary job, a tough one I suppose because it was a highly specialized one, but that is why he was let go.
