1873 National Association Preview

After having 6 teams disband over the past year leaving just 5 teams remaining, the upcoming 1873 campaign sees the addition of 4 new teams. They are the Marylands of Baltimore, the Resolutes of Elizabeth, the Whites of Philadelphia, and the Blue Legs of Washington.

Baltimore Canaries: In order to expect to win anything, you have to improve your team and the club from Baltimore didn’t do anything meaningful to improve their club.

C: Dick Higham (.317, 31 RBI, 47 R)
1B: Denny Mack (.217, 26 RBI, 34 R)
2B: Ed Beavens (.266, 36 RBI, 24 R)
3B: Ed Pinkham (.309, 3 HR & 31 RBI)
SS: Tom Carey (.320, 28 RBI, 40 R)
LF: Harry Berthrong (.248, 27 RBI, 40)
CF: Joe Simmons (11-47, 13 RBI with OLY and ECK last yr)
RF: Herm Doscher (.270, 12 RBI, 16 R)

SP: Bobby Mathews (23-27, 2.78 ERA)

Baltimore Marylands: A club with players that have played in the Association before, but not enough talent to compete.

C: Tommy Beals (5-41 last yr with NYU & OLY last yr)
1B: Jim Foran (11-23 last yr with TRO)
2B: Bob Ferguson (.277, 11 RBI, 15 R with Baltimore Canaries last yr)
3B: Fred Waterman (.333, 12 RBI, 28 R with TRO last yr)
SS: Mike McGeary (.281, 17 RBI with NAT, OLY & ECK last yr)
LF: Steve King (.366, 27 RBI, last yr with TRO)
CF: Paul Hines (1-11 last yr with BOS & NAT last yr)
RF: Clipper Flynn (.271, 28 RBI with ATH last yr)

SP: Ed Stratton (rookie)
SP: Asa Brainard (7-4 in 20 games with OLY & MAN last yr)

Boston Red Stockings:
Lets see, a team that has won two straight National Association championships, how could they have possibly improved? Well, they did by adding up and coming star 1B Jim O’Rourke and star RF Lip Pike. But with the addition of O’Rourke, that also means that George Wright will have no place to play as a regular and will ride the bench. In addition to that, they have the trio McVey, Barnes, and Wood returning. The team from Boston will definitely be in the hunt for its 3rd straight title.

C: Cal McVey (.350, 52 RBI, 46 R, 30 SB)
1B: Jim O’Rourke (.336, 12 RBI with MAN last yr)
2B: Jimmy Wood (.321, 35 RBI, 47 R)
3B: Ross Barnes (.456, 45 RBI, 71 R, 103 H, 28 SB)
SS: John Radcliff (.312, 27 RBI, 48 R)
LF: Doug Allison (.372, 2 HR & 14 RBI)
CF: Harry Wright (.307, 34 RBI, 39 R)
RF: Lip Pike (.417, 23 RBI, 24 R with Cleveland last yr)

SP: Al Spalding (32-14, 3.33 ERA last yr and 54-23 lifetime record)

Brooklyn Atlantics: Can the now 17 year Jim Britt pitch well enough this year for his team to win the Association? In reality, probably not, but, you never know.

C: Deacon White (.316, 26 RBI, 42 R with OLY, NAT & BRA last yr)
1B: Charlie Gould (.300, 20 RBI, 43 R)
2B: Jack Burdock (.260, 27 RBI, 37 R)
3B: Henry Burroughs (.209, 6 RBI, 13 R with OLY & NYU last yr)
SS: Ed Duffy (.252, 9 RBI, 18 R with TRO and BLC last yr)
LF: Al Thake (.354, 34 RBI, 38 R)
CF: Tom Foley (.250, 26 RBI, 30 R with OLY and BRA last yr)
RF: Al Reach (.227, 15 RBI, 20 R with NAT and ECK last yr)

SP: Jim Britt (14-23, 3.07 ERA as a 16 year old)

Elizabeth Resolutes:
With rookie Ken Lovett on the mound, the club from Elizabeth, New Jersey will probably struggle to compete.

C: Charlie Hodes (3-11 last yr with CLE)
1B: Everett Mills (.380, 18 RBI last yr with CLE)
2B: Eddie Booth (.261, 8 RBI, 25 R with MAN last yr)
3B: Steve Bellan (.336, 16 RBI, 33 R with TRO last yr)
SS: Ham Allen (.311, 12 RBI, 21 R with MAN last yr)
LF: Ned Cuthbert (.267, 20 RBI, 22 R with CLE last yr)
CF: Scott Hastings (.236, 20 RBI, 22 R with TRO last yr)
RF: Elmer White (3-12 last yr with CLE)

SP: Ken Lovett (rookie)

New York Mutuals: The biggest signing for the Mutuals was definitely the one that brought Cap Anson to New York. Also, they add Andy Leonard and George Hall. These three players immediately boost this team’s chances to win the Association.

C: Tom Barlow (.283, 22 RBI, 32 R with BRA last yr)
1B: Bill Allison (1-6 last yr with ECK)
2B: Bob Addy (.348, 40 RBI, 54 R, 94 H)
3B: Cap Anson (.409, 31 RBI, 31 R last yr with TRO)
SS: Andy Leonard (.319, 21 RBI, 32 R with OLY, NAT & ECK last yr)
LF: Tom York (18-50 last yr with NAT & BRA last yr)

RF: Bill Boyd (.360, 32 RBI, 49 R)

SP: Candy Cummings (23-26, 3.26 ERA)
SP: Rynie Wolters (2-5, 2 SV, 2.78 ERA in 31 G last yr)

Philadelphia Athletics: Here is a team that went out and brought in star 3B Ezra Sutton who forces former 3B Levi Meyerle to RF. Also, they sign star CF Fred Treacey. I don’t know, but maybe they should have horded a couple more pitchers.

C: John Clapp (.282, 14 RBI with MAN last yr)
1B: John Glenn (.267, 30 RBI, 47 R)
2B: Wes Fisler (.282, 41 RBI, 41 R)
3B: Ezra Sutton (.310, 18 RBI, 21 R with CLE last yr)

CF: Fred Treacey (.404, 18 RBI, 26 R with TRO last yr)
RF: Levi Meyerle (.366, 2 HR & 43 RBI, 49 R)

SP: George Zettlein (27-22 in 2 yrs with CNA and TRO)
SP: Dick McBride (23-21, 3.45 ERA last yr with PNA)
SP: Al Pratt (12-7, 2.64 last yr with CLE)
SP: Cherokee Fisher (3-0 in 13 games last yr with TRO)

Philadelphia Whites: For the new club from Philadelphia, the Whites, they have uncertainty as for who the starting pitcher on the team will be. Will it be Stearns or Malone? Other than that, this club doesn’t have much in the way of offensive threats besides Birdsall.

C: Dave Birdsall (.322, 19 RBI, 21 SB with CLE last yr)
1B: Bub McAtee (5-21 last yr with OLY and ECK)
2B: Jim Hall (.249, 25 RBI, 22 R with BRA last yr)

RF: Jim Devlin (rookie)

SP: Martin Malone (15-10, 2.58 ERA last yr with ECK)
SP: Bill Stearns (0-2, 3.45 in 11 G last yr with OLY and MAN)

Washington Blue Legs: Another team that just wont have enough talent to compete in the Association.

C: Harry Schafer (.319, 9 RBI with TRO last yr)
1B: Joe Start (.324, 25 RBI, 32 R with NAT & ECK last yr)
