I think what happened was one team just raided that team for their good players, so it really wasn't that fair in real life.

I have read a few cases of teams going out on western road trips and the team running out of money and the team not being able to get back home
The players would play for a local team for a few weeks for train fare back home
Baseball has come a long way from the day of shoe string teams poorly ran and not having enough money to go out on a 'western' road trip to chicago or cincinnati
