hotsoul, first a warm welcome to the community.
I'd recommend you start with fictional, to get a feel for the game, and to decide what's important to you- as you say, it can seem a bit complicated at first. I also thought I'd only want to play with real players when I started, but I think I prefer fictional play now; it's surprisingly good.
If you want to dive in with real rosters, I'm sure many of us will be able to help. First a few questions:
-what real-life season do you want to play? 2007?
-do you care about player photos, ballpark pics, logos, etc?
-what other mods interested you?
I can help with roster info. If you want the most complete 2007 set, the Cubbyfan/haveband rosters include near-complete minor leagues, and the ratings seem very good. The set is still being fine-tuned (although a beta release is available), so if you start with fictional, time will fly by and you'll have an optimal roster set when you're ready. When you download the set, it will be a zipped file; unzip (your computer will be able to do this automatically, most likely, if you double-click on the file), and drop the unzipped .lg folder in your saved games location. Lots of threads around with more detailed instructions, if you get stuck. Some of the preferences in Cubbyfan's roster set do not reflect real-life (waivers are off, for example). I'm going to go through the prefs when the next update is available (in a day or two), and I'll try to remember to post back here what should be changed to get a true-to-life MLB situation.
If you want to sim a historical season, the Lahman database is great; it's a database of all players who have played in MLB in the last 100 years, and the game generates very realistic ratings from the stats in the database. If, say, you want to play out the 1980 season, let me know, and I can suggest how to set up some of the game options. To use Lahman, download the comma separated version of the file (csv). When you use the League Setup Wizard, create a historical league, point OOTP to the location of the Lahman db, and the game will do the rest (almost). I think you can find the download location in the FAQ in the Historical section of the forum; if you have trouble tracking down the link, post back here.
As for photos and other picture things, I don't use them much, so hopefully someone else will be able to offer some advice.
