From Baseball Primer's Transaction Oracle.

Acquired DH Jack Cust from the Colorado Rockies for OF Chris Richard and cash.

Oracle Says:

I'm struck speechless by this trade which is a steal if the Orioles make the most of it.
From the Rockie point of view, Cust was a sub-Bichette in a non-DH league and outfield defense is important at Coors with such a large outfield. Richard will be in an upgrade in that department.

But, when you look at what's truly important, Cust is a young and talented hitter and he's heading to an organization that doesn't really have any position players that are young or talented. Well, unless you count Brian Roberts who shouldn't hit enough to be anything but a pitcher.

The Orioles being the Orioles, you can't just look at a trade without looking at what the Oriole-induced downside of a player move can be. The O's apparently want Jack Cust to start the season in the minors based on the erroneous notion that he's being blocked by the Oriole stable of designated hitters. It doesn't sem that they recognize that none of their stable of designated hitters are really all that valuable.

Despite the downside, Beat Again do get a temporary reprieve from me at least. That is, until they lose Cust on waivers because Jeff Conine wants to play another year.
