SP – NY: S. Bahnsen (5-2 2.20) KC: A. Fitzmorris (0-0 0.00)
GAME #049 vs New York L 9-3
WP – S. Bahnsen (6-2) LP – A. Fitzmorris (0-1)
HR – NY: J. Pepitone (9)

Again the Yankees jumped out early, this time to a 6-0 lead, and the Royals just couldn’t get going. The middle of the Yanks lineup, Roy White, Bobby Murcer and Joe Pepitone, went a combined 8 for 13 with 7 rbi’s. Murcer pushed his hit streak to 17 games with his three hit day.

For the Royals, the offensive highlights consisted of Lou Piniella’s 3 hit day and losing pitcher Al Fitzmorris’s 2 rbi double. If only Fitzmorris could have pitched as well as he hit, but he gave up six runs in his five innings of work.

POG – New York’s Joe Pepitone – 2 for 5, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 R

“Ninety pitches in five innings isn’t going to do it,” replied Fitzmorris when asked why he struggled today. “I didn’t walk many, but that’s more because when I did get it over the plate, they hit it hard.”

“They just kind of rolled over,” was Thurman Munson’s assessment of the game. “We got out in front early and they just kind of folded.”
