The Yankees were 29-20 when Sheffield started his long stint on the DL last year at the end of May. They went 17-15 for the next month afterwards. They didn't actually start taking off until just before the All-Star break when they won 9 of 10 after that awful 19-1 loss to Cleveland.
In other words, they did worse for quite a while after Sheffield got hurt.
