Brooks shows two phases to his career by what's in boxrec. From May 1966 to March 1969 he accummulated an 8-6-0,7KO record. He started out 4-5-0 with 2 losses to Don Waldheim, 6 round decisions dropped to Eddie Vick and Jose Roman, a 4 rounder to Jim Howard with wins against Eddie Lawrence(1-4-2,1) twice, Woodrow Jones and Devany Washington. Then in 1968 thru January 1969 he won 3 round KO's against Walter Dietrich and Ted Butler(0-8-1) and 1st round knockout of Barry O'Neil and a 6 round split decision over Billy Marquart. Then in March after the Marquart fight, Brooks looses a 6 round decision to Don WAldheim. There's no record of any more fights for Brooks after that for almost 10 years.
Then in January 1978 we see the second phase of Brooks' career. He fights 11 times in 1978 with 5 wins, 3 losses, 1 draw and 1 no contest. The only opponent faced with any kind of worthy record to speak of was the last fight in late December as he's outpointed in 8 rounds by Jesse Crown whose's 24-20-1 at the time. Brooks then is absent from the ring for another year and a half til June 1980. From then thru January 1983 he fights on and off winning the first fight against Paul Benjamin in June 1980 but then looses his last 4 fights, 3 by KO. He was TKO's by John Dino Denis in October 1980 in a fight billed as for the New England Heavyweight Title. His next fight in February 1981 he's KO'd by Scrott Frank in teh 2nd round.
Don Waldheim Rating 1 USA
HW 1965-69
5 wins / 5 losses / 2 draws / 0 KO
Alias: Waldhelm
Hometown: Brooklyn, NY
Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto
Fought 2, 4 round draws against Billy Marquart and Bob Felstein before Felstein beat Waldheim by 4 round majority decision in a rematch in March 1966. After 2, 4 round decisions over Al Brooks(14-14-1,8) in March and August 1966, Waldheim then lost a 4 round split decision to Jose Roman in late March 1967.
Marquart beat him in 4 rounder in Sept 1968 before Waldeim won 3 straight decision fights against Tony Norris, Al Brooks and Marquart. In May 1969 he was KO'd in the 2nd round by Bill Drover in St. John's, NF, Canada, Waldheim's only career fight outside of New York, New Jersey area. According to a short account of the fight in the September 1969 edition of The Ring, Drover dropped Waldheim toward the end of the 1st round for a mandatory 8 count, then went into the 2nd round and decked Waldhelm 3 times to then end the fight at 1:37 of the 2nd round.
His most noteable fight would have to be his last career bout in Madison Square Garden against 1968 Olympic heavyweight champion George Foreman, making his pro debute. The September 1969 edition of The Ring noted in a short account of the fight that Foreman's performance was disappointing with a "fair left jab" but he displayed a right that he tossed around in an "amateurish roundhouse fashion". The writer opioned that Foreman needed "plenty of schooling".
Walter Dietrich Rating 1 USA
HW 1964-68
2 wins / 2 losses / 2 draws / 0 KO
Hometown: Freeport, LI, NY
Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto
In December 1964 Dietrich won a 6 round decision over a Billy Kuhn and then lost a 4 round decision to Bob Stallings who was fighting for the 2nd time in his career that would see him with an up and down career through the 60's and 70's. On the 1st of February, Dietrich matched up against Kuhn again and the two fought a 4 round draw. Those fights with Dietrich are the only two listed in boxrec for Kuhn.
Dietrich does not have a listed fight then again till November 1067 when he draws 6 rounds with Billy Marquart. A 6 round decision over Ronnie Williams(2-9-0,1) in May 1968 and a KO loss to Al Brooks(14-14-1,8) at 1:55 in the 3rd round is it for Dietrich.
