LOL! Well, yeah, now that you mention it.
Caution: Last two opponents are not exactly grade-A quality right now. But yes, hitters are hitting, pitchers are pitching, fielders are fielding, and runners are running the way that they should.
Um, before I get justly flamed for that comment, let me be more specific. You guys know this, but I will recap for the casual reader and visitor to this prestigious and influential thread.
Abreu, Cabrera, and Cano have all started hitting at the same time. Cabrera in CF, moving Damon to DH (the "blessing in disguise," as Torre put it, about Giambi on the DL) is working out well. Combined with Jeter, Posada, Matsui, and A-Rod, this is the potent line-up that we thought we had (and did have in April, but that seems so long ago).
Torre puts Cairo in at 1B in response to Mientkiewicz's injury, and he proceeds to look like he's been playing there his entire career, thereby annoying the heck out of Phelps, I bet. Too bad, whatever works.
What a pleasure that the starting rotation seems to be settled now. That's not just about Clemens, although he does complete the picture if he can continue to give quality starts (see caution above). We had to go through the weeding-out process to find and rid ourselves of Igawa, Wright, and DeSalvo (and Pavano, although he took care of that himself). It's unfortunate about Hughes, Karstens, and Rasner, but we may not need them now. In the future, yes, but hopefully not now.
The only bad news right now is the bullpen. You got to know that Proctor, Farnsworth, Villone, and Vizcaino are going to cost you some games down the line. I would have lumped Myers in there, but I looked at his ERA just now, 2.84! When did that happen? Anyway, I wish the Yankees would have released one of those other guys and kept Britton with the team.
One more item of note, did you see that the Yankees drafted an ambidextrous pitcher in the 45th round (though that being an indication that his chances of making the MLB are remote)? I would like to see that guy pitch. Heck, I just want to look at his specially made glove that fits either hand. It would be great if the rules permitted a pitcher to switch arms during an at-bat, can you imagine? However, I read that pitchers must pitch from the same side for the entire at-bat.
