It took eleven innings but when Ed Kirkpatrick doubled to score Jackie Hernandez, the Royals were able to move above the .500 mark for the first time ever.

Both starting pitchers only gave up two runs on four hits, however Mike Hedlund got another no-decision, his fourth in five starts.

POG – California’s Rudy May – 8 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 94 pitches

“Whaddya want me to do,” exclaimed Hedlund when asked about the no decisions. “I pitch, the batters hit, and as long as we win, that’s all that matters. You guys are making a big deal about nothing.

GAME #024 @ California L 2-0 – GAME 2
WP – A. Messersmith (3-1) LP – J. Rooker (1-1) SV – V. Geishert (1)

Being over .500 lasted only a few hours as the Angels won the nightcap of the doubleheader. California’s Andy Messersmith bamboozled the Royals over 8.1 innings, allowing only 5 hits while striking out 8.

Royals spot starter Jim Rooker, who was just switched to the bullpen, had a solid game himself but was no match for the Angel’s hurler.

POG – California’s Andy Messersmith – 8.1 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K, 122 pitches

“We saw a whole bunch of outstanding pitching here today,” quipped Lou Piniella. “At least we were able to get a split out of this.”
