Yankees Let Bats Do the Talking
04/12/2007
After failing to hit the ball well for the majority of the series with the Baltimore Orioles, then exploding for seven runs in the final game, fans were left to wonder which Yankee offense would show up when the team traveled to Toronto last night to face the Blue Jays. Well, fourteen hits and ten runs later, we have our definite answer. The Yankee offense came in bunches, as they scored in just three innings to get their ten runs. The main man for New York was Jason Giambi, who went 3-4 with three RBIs on a bases clearing double in the eighth inning. The double came after Toronto had closed the gap to 6-5 and appeared to have seized momentum. For his efforts, Giambi earned player of the game honors. Damon, Jeter, ARod and Cano all contributed two hits a piece and combined for five New York runs and four RBIs.
Mike Mussina pitched seven innings, and had decent stuff, if not overly impressive. He allowed five earned runs on seven hits, walking two. Luiz Vizcaino came in for the final two innings to finish off the game, holding Toronto scoreless. For the Blue Jays, starter Burnett allowed six runs in just 5.2 innings, getting him the early exit. Relievers Brian Sweeney and Jason Frasor allowed a pair of runs a piece, as they were unable to stop the bleeding. Rightfielder John-Ford Griffin had three hits, including a homerun, for the home team, providing most of their offense. On this night, however, it was not enough, as the Bombers won 10-5. New York improved to 4-3 on the season, and will face Roy Halladay tomorrow night in the second game of the three game set.
