April Awards and End of Month Standings

AL HITTER OF THE MONTH
Boston Red Sox – Reggie Smith : .438/.500/.809, 8 2B, 2 3B, 7 HR, 20 RBI, 18 R

If Reggie wasn't named as the AL player of the month, there should have been a recount. Luckily, that wasn't the case. Reggie currently has a twenty game hitting streak and leads the AL in multiple offensive categories.

NL HITTER OF THE MONTH
San Francisco Giants – Willie McCovey : .299/.465/.532, 3 2B, 5 HR, 17 RBI, 13 R

Willie was a surprising choice as the NL player of the month for April. He didn't lead any offensive categories, while Atlanta's Clete Boyer, who leads the NL in HR and the majors in RBI, didn't get recognized.

AL PITCHER OF THE MONTH
Baltimore Orioles – Nelson Briles : 4-1, 0.88, 41 IP, 28 H, 5 BB, 23 K, 2 HRA, 0.80 WHIP

What a deal it's turning out to be so far for the O's. Acquired from the Cardinals prior to spring training, Briles has been the dominant pitcher in the AL. The man he was traded for, Davey Johnson? He has yet to hit his stride only hitting .277 with 2 rbi.

NL PITCHER OF THE MONTH
Philadelphia Phillies – Rick Wise : 4-0, 1.90, 42.2 IP, 38 H, 11 BB, 21 K, 1 HRA, 1.15 WHIP

It could be argued that Rick Wise isn't even the best pitcher on his own staff, as Grant Jackson could have easily been given this award. Not to say he doesn't deserve this, but there's clearly a pattern with the NL awards committee.

AL ROOKIE OF THE MONTH
New York Yankees – John Ellis : .310/.355/.423, 5 2B, 1 HR, 13 RBI, 5 R

It's been a really good month for the Yankee rookie as he's already had a 14 game hit streak, leading the team in doubles and second in rbi's. Too bad that the Yankees are in the same division as the red hot Tigers.

NL ROOKIE OF THE MONTH
Los Angeles Dodgers – Ted Sizemore : .306/.344/.365, 5 2B, 8 RBI, 15 R, 1 SB

Solid numbers from Sizemore. He's helped the Dodgers to second place thus far, 1 game behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL West.
