WHBA Championship

WHBA Title Fight

Champion Sam Langford, Canada, 17-3-0 (16) vs. #21 Earnie Shavers, USA, 12-3-0 (12)

Shavers is a hard-hitting, KO artist that has some impressive wins over Rocky Balboa (TKO5), Sonny Liston (TKO4), Marvin Hart (KO2) and Pietro Aurino (TKO9). This will be Shavers first title shot opportunity. Langford is defending his WHBA Title for the 5th time. Not much action here in the 1st but the champ has sustained a cut from a punch that was landed by the “Black Destroyer.” Rounds 2 and 3 are split. Shavers is trapped in the corner and goes down from three wicked shots in the 4th. Langford completely controls the round, 29-5. Shavers is lucky to have gotten out of that round on his feet. Shavers comes back strong and lands some nice punches, 19-6, in the 5th. The “Boston Tar Baby” could be in trouble here as the doctor comes up to check his cut. The fight is allowed to continue but Langford and his corner have to be worried that the ref could stop the fight at any time if his cut gets any worse. And you can bet that Shavers will be going after that cut! There it is, just like we had predicted. Shavers comes out in the 6th and lands several punches on the cut. The referee steps in and stops the fight on the advice of the doctor. Earnie Shavers, in a bit of a surprise upset, is the winner here (TKO6) at the :45 mark and is the new WHBA Champion. Cards at time of stoppage: 48-46 Langford, 47-47, 47-47.
