Andrew Zarzour wasn't as fortunate in his second go-around against Sammy Sosa. With one out in the fourth inning, the smooth Cubs swinger stroked a ball to left-center for a base hit. Preston Wilson followed with a single, and Zarzour felt pressure on the base paths for the first time.
Mark Grace took a Zarzour pitch to the gap in right-center, and Sosa headed for home. Raul Mondesi tried to throw him out at the plate but was way too late. Everybody moved up, and the score was now 3-1 Dodgers. Zarzour's first earned run.
But Chicago would squander a golden opportunity to climb back into the game. Zarzour fanned Manwaring (his first Major League "K"!). While he walked Henry Rodriguez to load the bases, he got Mickey Morandini to strike out as well. The "out" pitch was a nasty slider that made Morandini look like an amateur. Zarzour thought at the time that was the best pitch he had thrown in his life. And at a good time as well.
Whew. Zarzour knew he had made mistakes that inning and felt lucky to still be ahead by two runs...
